Ancient Messini
Find some time and visit Ancient Messini, the most preserved city of ancient Greece, with impressive buildings that inspire awe in the visitor. Ancient Messini is about 30km away from Kalamata near the village Mavrommati. It is a rare, well preserved archaeological site, where the visitor is impressed by viewing temples, houses, walls and public buildings revealing the the glorious past of the area.
Arcadian Gate
The Arcadian Gate is an impressive monument, that consists one of the two gates on Ancient Messini and a part of the fortifications of the ancient city. The Arcadian Gate is a monumental construction, built with large limestone rectangular stones showing an example of high fortification technique. It is located to the north of the archeological site.
Olympia
Olympia is one of the most influential ancient Greek sanctuaries and the most important in western Peloponnese. Ancient Olympia is located in Elis. The archaeological site held over 70 significant buildings, and ruins of many of these survived over the centuries, although the main Temple of Zeus survives only as stones on the ground. The site is a major tourist attraction, and has two museums, one devoted to the ancient and modern games.
Palace of Nestor
One of the most well-preserved Mycenaean Palaces in Greece is located in the area of Pylia and is known as the Palace of Nestor, the famous king of Pylos. It is located 14 km from Pylos. The palace was built in the 13th century BC by King Nestor, who is mentioned many times in the Homeric epics. Many archaeological findings from the site of the Palace of Nestor are kept at the Archaeological Museum of Chora, as well as the Archaeological Museum of Messenia, in Kalamata.
The Castle of Methoni
The Castle of Methoni is an impressive medieval fortification in the port town of Methoni. The castle of Methoni occupies the whole area of the cape and the southwestern coast. On the south part of the walls rises the spectacular sea gate which has recently been restored. A stone-paved stretch leads over a small bridge to the small fortified islet of Bourtzi.
The Castle of Koroni
The Castle of Koroni is one of the biggest and most famous castles of Greece. Located in Koroni dominates the whole area and is one of the few castles in Greece that continues to be inhabited until today. The Castle existed since the 7th century AD and was completed and reconstructed by the Venetians in the 13th century.
